Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: design and build quality
Samsung's Galaxy S7 series was announced on February 21 in Barcelona. The event took place a day before the Mobile World Congress trade show and saw the lid lifted on one of the most hyped smartphones in recent memory.
The Galaxy S6 is a beauty, boasting a stunning glass and metal design that really makes the mobile glorious to behold. The Galaxy S7 is remarkably similar, visually, to the s6, but with curved rear edges leading to the frame.
In news that'll put smiles on plenty of faces, the camera bump present on the Galaxy S6 has been smoothed out for the Galaxy S7. The forward-facing camera makes itself at home on the far right of the top panel.
The Galaxy S7 is the same size as the S6 except for being marginally thicker because of a larger battery, which we'll get to later.

The LG G5 also made its debut at Mobile World Congress on February 21. Again, the design of the device is similar to its predecessor, but there are some notable differences.
The LG G5 has a metal unibody design, mirroring other flagship devices. This is a significant upgrade over the plastic or leather that graced the rear of the LG G4. There is also a cap on the base of the device that can be removed to reveal the battery and the Magic Slot, which you'll hear more about later.

One of our design highlights of the LG G4 is the mobile's unique rear panel, which features a volume rocker and power button. On the LG G5, only the power button, which is also now a fingerprint scanner, remains on the rear panel of the device. The volume rockers have moved to the left-hand side of the frame.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: display
The Samsung Galaxy S7 has a 5.1-inch display, just like the S6. It's a QHD AMOLED display, which brings with it all the clarity and beauty that we love from the S6.

The LG G5 has a 5.3-inch LED IPS screen. Our hands-on test showed it to be a strong display, but whether it can compare to the S7's seems unlikely, although a more thorough comparison, when we have both devices in our offices, will confirm this.
Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: processor and storage
Depending on where you are in the world, the Galaxy S7 will either come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 processor. Both are remarkably powerful, and the differences in performance between them will be negligible.
On top of that, the S7 boasts 4 GB of RAM, 32 or 64 GB of internal storage and will run the latest build of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
It's a similar story over at LG's G5 camp. It is powered by the Snapdragon 820 processor and has 4 GB of RAM. The LG G4 runs on a Snapdragon 808 chip that copes well with strenuous tasks.
Web browsing and general use are delightfully nippy on the LG G4, and our hands-on test with the G5 gave the same impression. The LG G5 arrived with 32 GB of storage.
Both devices support microSD cards.
Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: camera
The Samsung Galaxy S7 will arrive with a 12 MP camera. Last year, the Samsung Galaxy S6 dropped with a 16 MP OIS camera. While the megapixel count on the S7 is lower, dual-pixel technology and a greater aperture size mean that the camera should be an improvement on the S6's, particularly in low-light conditions. On the other side of the gadget is a 5 MP snapper.
The camera bump felt on the back of the Samsung Galaxy S6 has been reduced to a just 0.8 mm on the S7, allowing it to lie almost flat when placed on a surface.
The LG G5 will arrive with a dual camera setup on the back, starring a 16 MP main camera and an 8 MP wide-angle camera. The additional 8 MP camera provides a 135-degree field of view. This can be utilized seamlessly from within the camera app, by zooming in and out. The camera on the LG G4 is a fantastic shooter and manual mode offers more than enough to keep photo fanatics entertained. The LG G5 retains the granular manual mode, and there's no reason to doubt that the new set up on the G5 will be an improvement.

A dual-camera configuration on the LG G5 will certainly take the photo experience to the next level, and it's a key feature setting LG's smartphone apart from Samsung's. Exactly how well it will perform in different lighting conditions, however, remains to be seen.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: software
The Samsung Galaxy S7 will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow and a version of TouchWiz almost identical to that seen on the Note 5 and S6 Edge+.
The LG G5 will also have Marshmallow, and it will have LG's own UX 5.0 pasted over the top. UX 5.0 sees the removal of the app drawer, which is perhaps the most immediately obvious change from the version seen on the LG G4. Dual-window mode is also no longer present.
Ultimately, user preference rules all when it comes to manufacturer UIs, but we feel TouchWiz's features offer a subtle advantage over LG's UX.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: battery
While the Samsung Galaxy S6 featured a 2,550 mAh battery, the Samsung Galaxy S7 has been treated to an increased, 3,000-mAh battery. This is a welcome upgrade, given the S6's slovenly battery performance.

The 3,000 mAh battery stuffed inside the LG G4 fights an ongoing battle against the gadget's QHD display, and the result is battery life that's not out of this world. Surprisingly, LG has opted to decrease the battery size on the LG G5, which now sits at 2,800 mAh. The battery is easily removable, however, so carrying around a spare is an option.
With both devices on Marshmallow, we can only hope that Doze will work wonders on their battery lives, but only a thorough test will answer this question.
Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: features
The LG G5 has a removable cap on the base of the device that reveals what the company is calling a Magic Slot. This proprietary connector allows you to use a variety of gadgets and modules with the smartphone, such as VR headsets, cameras and speakers. How this technology is adopted by manufacturers of such external hardware remains to be seen, but it is certainly an interesting addition.

Both devices have an always-on display, which permanently displays notifications as well as the time and date. While the LG G5 utilizes a separate screen for this, the S7, with its AMOLED display, simply illuminates individual pixels, while the rest remain off.
In theory, the S7 should require less battery power to run its always-on display, but we can only confirm this for certain once we've got both devices in our offices.
Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: specs
Now that both devices have been unveiled we can take a look over their specs tables, which are very similar.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG G5: verdict
The Samsung Galaxy S7 has the smaller screen of the two devices, but, otherwise, the pair is remarkably similar. Both smartphones run the latest build of Android 6.0 Marshmallow and both do a great job of showing off the platform.

The Galaxy S7's 12 MP camera could be topped by the headline-grabbing dual camera setup on the LG G5. The G5 also offers a removable battery, which the S7 does not, and the G5 also has the ability to connect to a variety of peripheral devices through its Magic Slot. The S7, however, has the stronger display and arguably the nicer design.
